Rebecca Rubin News Editor, OnlineRegina King’s directorial debut, “One Night in Miami,” has sold worldwide rights to Amazon Studios.Amazon plans to release “One Night in Miami” later this year and sees the film as a potential awards contender.
As announced earlier Thursday, “One Night in Miami” will have its worldwide debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.Amazon nabbed the film after a competitive bidding war between a number of studios.
Details of the sale were not disclosed, but insiders say it was one of the biggest independent film sales in history. Though rivals offered more money for “One Night in Miami,” sources say the filmmakers wanted to work with Amazon because of their passion for the movie.
