The Queen has joked about the one colour she can never wear as people would no longer know "who she is".The 95 year old Monarch, who has returned to Prince Philip's cottage for the first time without him, is known for her choice of colourful and bright hats, with matching coat dresses, gloves and a string of pearls.

However, journalist Robert Hardman has reflected on the royal joking about the one colour she refuses to wear as it doesn't allow her to stand out. "My favourite remark she ever said was, 'I can ever wear beige because nobody will know who I am,'" Robert recalled in his biography of the Queen.

Robert's remarks were backed up by her daughter-in-law Sophie Wessex in the 2016 documentary, Our Queen at Ninety. Sophie explained: "Don't forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen's hat as she went past. "She needs to stand out for people to be able to say 'I saw the Queen'." The uniform of a bright coordinating suit and statement headwear has become Her Majesty's signature style, and she seems to keep her look fresh by sporting it in every colour of the rainbow.

According to Brian Hoey's book, Not In Front of the Corgis, when the Queen grows tired of an outfit, she gives it to her dressers, who are then allowed to either wear it themselves or sell it.
