Wigan council plans to shut high street to cars at weekends help with social distancing
A Greater Manchester council is planning to stop drivers from using a town centre road at the weekend in a bid to create more space for social distancing.Wigan town hall is proposing a temporary closure of Market Street in Atherton to allow businesses to set up outdoor seating areas and give more space for pedestrians. The road would only be shut on weekends, but it is hoped that closure will come into effect from Saturday, July 11, and last through the summer months. The proposals will prevent traffic using Market Street on Saturdays, 10.30am to 11pm and on Sundays 10.30am to 7pm.Due to the impact on bus services, two temporary bus stops on Mealhouse Lane would also be put in place at the weekend.Coun David Molyneux, leader of Wigan council,
