The Kilwinning business community has turned in a petition with almost 4,000 signatures to 'hypocritical' North Ayrshire Council in a bid to scrap their plans to introduce car parking fees. The council hopes to introduce parking fees at Kilwinning's Almswall Road and Oxenward; Irvine's Kirkgate, West Road and East Road; Largs' Gateside Street and Saltcoats' Chapwell Street, Bradshaw Street, Windmill Street and Kirkgate. However, business owners and their customers fear this will signal the end of their trade and the death of Main Street. It comes as councillors clashed over the hot topic leading to a full council meeting being halted after officials got into a verbal barmy.Commercial landlord Graeme Milliken, along with his tenant Dino and Sons Greengrocer, began the petition after they found out the council was moving forward with their plans without consulting the community. He said: "The hypocrisy of North Ayrshire Council is unbelievable.

When I handed in the petition to the council offices I saw posters all over the place saying things like; 'A council that is fair for all.

Our council engages with, listens to, and supports communities to be active partners in what we do', but they haven't spoken to anyone about the car park fees."The message they are touting is the complete opposite of how they are treating us.

They are potentially running us all out of business without even speaking to us. It's wrong on every level."Parking fees are not something people need right now.
