Pals raise thousands for cancer charity in memory of sorely missed dad

A team of golfers have raised thousands of pounds for charity in memory of a sorely missed friend.The fundraising event was held by keen golfers and pals of dad-of-two Hugh Wright - known as Shug to his family and friends - who died from peritoneal cancer in June 2018 aged just 57.Peritoneal cancer is a rare cancer that starts in the thin layer of tissue lining the inside of the abdomen and Hugh’s friends said they wanted to help other families affected by the devastating disease.In total the group have raised £6,481 for Cancer Research UK by organising the Hugh Wright Memorial Trophy competition day at Linlithgow Golf Club.

This year’s event raised £2,787 to add to the £3,694 raised at the event in May 2021.Former company director Hugh developed a love for golf after joining Linlithgow golf club as a teenager.Friends and Linlithgow Golf Club members, Colin Fowler and Ian Shiells, helped created the event at the club.Hugh’s wife, Mags Wright chose funds raised this year and last year to go to Cancer Research UK to support research to help more men, women and children in Linlithgow and across the country survive cancer.She presented the cheque at the Cancer Research UK shop in High Street, Linlithgow.Mags, of Linlithgow, said: “Many of those who took part knew my husband so it’s a lovely way for us all to remember him.

He loved golf and met some of his very best friends through the sport.“We had wonderful weather and it was a great day this year and I know Hugh would be pleased to know the event raised vital funds to help other families.
