Outlander boss says Scots time-travel drama faces more 'challenges' than other shows
dailyrecord.co.ukAn Outlander boss has been opening up on the “challenges” faced by show makers that are different to other productions.Executive producer Matthew Roberts was speaking on the Where The Waters podcast recently when he highlighted the “small moments that make Outlander, Outlander” compared to other hit programmes, like US crime drama Law and Order.Roberts said there are particular elements of Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon's book franchise and filmed and set in Scotland.
He said: “We didn’t have room [for everything]. And that’s probably the ongoing major challenge of Outlander.“Trying to fit all of this story in a finite amount of time.“And you try to get in as much story as possible.
Again, the balance of plot and character is big for us.”He added: “Absolutely there are shows that are out there that can do all plot, procedurals are basically all plot, famously Law and Order which is nothing but plot.“There is not a lot of character beats in Law and Order, great show, you can pop in anytime, you can watch any episode and it works.“But for us, we need to balance plot that pushes the story forward and character which makes you want to care about the characters.”Outlander's loyal fan base are currently in a 'droughtlander' as they await news of the second part of season seven, which is due to hit screens early this year.
It'll be a bittersweet return for the show, which is currently in production for the eighth and final instalment of Jamie and Claire Fraser's love story.
