Viewers have become obsessed with the 12-part drama, which is based on the bestselling novel by Sally Rooney, and its story of first love.
The plot follows the turbulent relationship between Connell (Paul Mescal) and Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones). The series, on BBC Three, has been downloaded more than 23 million times, and Desmond admits the cast have been shocked by the response from viewers.
He told Sunday Life: "Because the book was such a great piece of work and was so successful, we knew there was a lot of anticipation for the drama.
