Join thousands of others who have signed up to the weekly Scotland Now newsletter for the latest Scottish heritage and culture news.Conservationists are celebrating a "once in a lifetime" find after discovering one of the UK’s rarest bees at a remote site in northeast Scotland.The Great Yellow bumblebee, recognisable for its mustard-yellow hairs and black band between the wings, was spotted just south of John O’Groats in an area of thick heathland.The distinctive insect used to be widespread throughout the country, but its numbers have declined by 80% over the last century and is now only found in small populations in the north Highlands and the Islands of Scotland.Sadly, the rare bees are now only spotted in five areas; Caithness, North.
