Mariah Carey is being sued over her most popular song, “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. The singer’s hit song was released in 1994 and has since gone on to become not only a holiday staple, but has sat in the #1 spot on the charts over the holiday season for the past few years. Click inside to find out why Mariah is being sued over the song… Now, Deadline reports that Mariah and her co-songwriter Walter Afansieff are being sued over the track by Andy Stone, who wrote another song called “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, which was famously performed by Vince Vance & the Valiants in 1989.

The outlet says that Andy is claiming copyright infringement over the song title, which typically are not protected by copyright.

There are currently 177 titles with the same name. Andy is saying that his song received extensive airplay during the 1993 holiday season, and is asking for $20 million in damages due to the same titles.

He says that Mariah and Walter “intentionally engaged in a campaign to infringe” his copyright on the work. “Song titles aren’t entitled to copyright protection,” Pamela Koslyn, a Los Angeles attorney specializing in music and intellectual property rights, said to the site. “That’s why there are 177 works using the same title.
