Manchester United are continuing to progress in protracted negotiations to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. Barcelona are holding out for an overall fee of around €75million and United sources say the deal has still not been concluded as there is "still significant complexity to work through".
Sources privy to discussions say United have made "positive progress" while Spanish sources add the deal is closer seven weeks on from when United first contacted Barcelona about De Jong. Also read: Ten Hag makes Ferguson rule change with United players The Manchester Evening News reported on Monday United and Barcelona were hopeful of reaching an agreement for De Jong, 25, soon as he prepares to return from holiday this week.
The MEN revealed United submitted an improved bid for De Jong, 25, last week and sources say it is a matter of "when, not if" the deal is finalised.
New United manager Erik ten Hag is pushing to secure De Jong, whom he developed at Ajax, as his first signing. Barcelona coach Xavi has explained the situation to De Jong, who was initially reluctant to leave his "dream club", but Ten Hag has assuaged his concerns about joining United.
