Frenkie de Jong’s arrival would not be a statement signing by Erik ten Hag, according to Manchester United hero Teddy Sheringham.
Despite a principle deal being in place with Barcelona, it seems their £17m wage debt to the player following their Covid pandemic deferment agreement is proving to be a real stumbling block.
The Netherlands midfielder has been included in the Spanish club’s pre-season tour squad ahead of their trip to the USA. De Jong has underlined that his preference is to stay at Barcelona, but Ten Hag still has him as his top summer target. Sheringham doesn’t believe his arrival would be the signing the club ultimately needs, pointing to other options they could have been chasing.
