'Looking unlikely' that Rose of Tralee will go ahead this year

A spokesperson for the Rose of Tralee has said that it is “looking unlikely” that the event can go ahead this year because of the government’s ban on public gatherings of more than 5,000 people because of Covid-19.

All large scale public and sporting events of more than 5,000 people have been outlawed until the end of August. Amy Keane told RTÉ radio’s Today with Séan O’Rourke show that the organisers are looking at what sort of event they could deliver safely.

In a standard year the competition would attract up to 100,000 people to the Kerry town for the week of the event. During the five days of the competition up to 5,000 people would attend the Dome each evening with 15,000 to 20,000 gathering for parades and 2,000 to 4,000 people
