Hate Crime Bill in the dock as judges raise concern over proposed new law

hate-crime laws in Scotland. A massive 145 submissions from organisations were published by the Scottish Parliament yesterday - with nearly 2000 more individual responses yet to come in an inquiry.

Dozens of groups, including victim support organisations, welcome the aim of tackling horrendous hate crimes based on characteristics such as sexuality, race and age.But serious concern centres on a section of the proposals on “stirring up hate”.Scottish Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf insisted there is no intention to “stifle criticism or rigorous debate”.

But he accepted there will need to be “compromise” in the face of a backlash.MSPs are probing the Hate Crime Bill with experts at Holyrood from next month.
