Manchester has become a go-to destination for shopping with its Trafford Centre, The Arndale Centre, and rows of high-end stores at New Cathedral Street leading to Selfridges.

While shopping at a huge complex is now the norm, people in the city centre once got their retail therapy fix under glass-ceiled passageways that were built in the Victorian era - known as arcades.

They housed small shops in tiers with balconies, and at one time, there were five to choose from. In their heyday, they were seen as symbols of modernity with their innovative architectural design, but over time they were lost to urban developments.
