Fresh petition calls for u-turn over Stirling Council's controversial monthly bin uplifts

More than 1000 residents have signed a new petition urging Stirling Council to overturn the decision to switch to monthly bin uplifts.The Stirling and Clackmannanshire Tory group launched the petition to try and force the council into a U-turn over the highly controversial decision to revert from fortnightly collections to every four weeks.The changes, which came in to force back in September, sparked outrage with a reduction in uplifts for grey bin (general waste) and blue bin (plastic, cans and cartons) collections.But an initial petition of 6,000 signatures, a further petition of around 4,000 names, and a motion of no confidence lodged against the administration all failed to stop the changes being introduced.The council said the early petition was not valid, according to rules, because it related to a decision taken by full council within a six-month period.In Friday’s Observer we told how one rural councillor raised concerns that the suspension of additional festive bin collections, due to Covid-related staff shortages, has been exacerbated by Stirling’s switch to monthly uplifts last year.Trossachs and Teith Tory councillor Martin Earl claims that, had the council not made the changes, then the disruption brought about by coronavirus would have been lessened.Click here for more news and sport from the Stirling area.He said last week: “You cannot slash a basic service to the bone and get away with it.”Now the Stirling Tory group have launched an online petition to “rescue bin collections” in the region.The petition reads: ‘Stirling Council’s SNP/Labour administration have made major changes to bin collections across Stirling – reducing the frequency of bin collection from every two weeks to every four weeks;
