Football coach raped teenager leaving him completely 'traumatised' and with a drinking problem

A vile former football coach who plied a young player with booze before taking him back to his home and raping him has been locked up.

Michael Coleman, now aged 79, inflicted horrifying sexual abuse on his victim throughout the 1970s, who was only 15. Coleman had been employed as a manager at a sports centre when he started preying on the teenager, Manchester Evening News reports.The abuse started when Coleman touched his young victim inappropriately in the showers.He then took the boy back to his flat on a number of occasions.He purchased the youngster alcohol and food before pressuring him to perform sex acts.The teenager believed the assaults were "required” if you wanted to become a professional footballer.The abuse ensued over a number of visits before the youth player was taken back to Coleman’s flat for one final time.He raped the boy while the teenager screamed for him to stop.Once home, the victim cried all night and was forced to hide his blood-stained underwear from his parents.

In a statement read out in Bolton Crown Court on Tuesday (February 15), he said the abuse has had a “traumatic effect” on his life.

It also led to him developing a drinking problem.“This traumatic thing that happened to me has affected me emotionally and I find it hard to get close to anyone, including my sons,” he said.“The crime has cost me my marriage.“I kept having recurring nightmares for a while.“These crimes have had a very traumatic effect on my life.”The victim stayed quiet about the abuse for decades until he came across an article in 2018.He read how Coleman had been convicted of abusing young boys in the 1980’s.
