The days are finally getting longer in Scotland as we enter into the long-awaited spring months. Sunday saw us take a significant leap into the brighter days, as we shifted our clocks forward by one hour.While this signals an end to the cold, dark winter, many of us will find the first few days of the transition a little bit difficult.

And for those of us that enjoy a little snack before bed, there are certain things we should avoid eating before nodding off.

Experts at Benenden Health recommend avoiding eating late at night, while paying attention to portion control. Scots should also avoid stimulants, such as sugar or caffeine, in the hours before bed.But you should not avoid food entirely, as going to bed on an empty stomach can drop blood sugar levels, which interferes with the body’s ability to sleep well.Benenden Health has listed five of the worst and five of the best foods you should eat before bed.

High levels of caffeine in chocolate make it a poor choice for late-night snacking. During the latter stages of sleep, caffeine consumption can cause rapid eye movement (REM) to occur more frequently, which is why you’re more likely to feel groggy the morning after the night before.
