Fire crews battle huge blaze at London flats as glass panels seen crashing to ground

Fire crews are currently battling a huge blaze at a block of flats in London. The fire broke out at a residential tower block on Whitechapel High Street in the east end of the city at around 3.55pm this afternoon.

The London Fire Brigade service quickly sent 10 appliances and 70 firefighters to the scene, who are currently tackling the blaze.

It's understood the building is the Relay Building, which is a 21-storey residential block, reports the Mirror Online. Metropolitan Police confirmed an evacuation of the building was underway.Dozens of calls to the emergency services flooded in after the inferno broke out and locals have reported seeing glass panels crashing down from the building.Firefighters are still working to tackle the blaze and have been using a 64-metre ladder and two cranes to reach the affected properties.The building is split into two sections - with the lower floors being used as offices while the top floors - where the fire broke out - are residential.It's understood that all residents have now been evacuated from the building.Earlier, the fire brigade wrote: "We're dealing with this fire on #WhiteChapel High Street.

Ten fire engines & 70 firefighters are at the scene. Please avoid the area if possible."Witness Owen Willis told our sister title the Mirror: "From the eastern view, on Commercial Road, we can see a row of windows blown out with fire burning on the ceilings still."It’s very windy so it looks like the smoke and flames are blowing all over the place."Seems to be dying down a bit although that’s just what we can see from outside."Earlier today another tweeted a video showing raging orange flames climbing up the side of the glass high-rise tower as clouds of dark smoke billowed into the sky.He
