Naman Ramachandran Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s Busan International Film Festival selection “The Storyteller,” based on a short story by Oscar-winning Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, isn’t “just another homage” to the late master. Film enthusiast Tapobrati Das Sammaddar recommended Ray’s story “Golpo Boliye Tarini Khuro” to Mahadevan, who was “instantly fascinated by the layered social satire.” The story follows an unpublished Bengali storyteller who answers a help ad from a Gujarati businessman who suffers from insomnia, and there is a twist in the tale. Samaddar translated the story and Kireet Khurana (“T for Taj Mahal”) and Mahadevan developed it into a screenplay that was a faithful adaptation of the original. Mahadevan, who cites Ray’s “Charulata” and “Pather Panchali” as influences, says that the choice of film grammar was the tricky part of the shoot.

Now in post-production, the film is directed by Seo You-min (“Recalled”).

Paramount+ has a set a premiere date for the upcoming Teen Wolf: The Movie. The film, written and produced by Jeff Davis, will debut Thursday, January 26, 2023 exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada, and the following day on Paramount+ in the UK, Latin America, and Australia. Eight of them are screening at the Busan International Film Festival and a handful have planned releases in the fourth quarter of 2022 or early 2023. M-Line is handling sales on “Jiseok,” the documentary feature about the Busan festival’s co-founder and former head programmer who died in 2018 and now has a festival section named in his honor. The film plays at the festival as a BIFF Special Screening. “A Letter From Kyoto” depicts the story of a widow who raised her three daughters after her husband passed away. One of her daughters chanced upon a letter written in Japanese which sparked her curiosity. As mother and daughter delved deeper into her mother’s past life, secrets buried for decades begin to surface. Directed by Kim Min-ju, this is her debut feature and stars Cha Mi-kyeong and Han Seon-hwa. The film was also selected for BIFF’s Panorama section. 

Ahead of former President Trump’s rallies this weekend in the key general election battlegrounds of Arizona and Nevada, a recently formed Trump super PAC is launching ads in crucial midterm races in both states. The spots by Make America Great Again Inc., which start running on TV Saturday, were shared first with Fox News Friday.  The new ads follow by a day the first commercials released by the super PAC targeting hotly contested Senate races in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where GOP-held open seats are being heavily targeted by the Democrats in November's midterm elections.  Fox News' "Hannity" and the Wall Street Journal first reported about the ads.  The commercial in Arizona takes aim at Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly and Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, the Democrats’ gubernatorial nominee.

The bigger the bear, the better! Katmai National Park has kicked off its annual Fat Bear Week from Oct. 5 to 11, 2022, in which some of Alaska’s biggest bears are ranked ahead of winter hibernation.  The week celebrates the resilience, adaptability and strength of Katmai’s brown bear population as the animals prepare to hibernate, according to the National Park Service (NPS). The single elimination tournament has matched up 12 bears to compete for the title of fattest bear.
