Novak Djokovic has said he is "extremely disappointed" he can't compete in the Australian Open after his visa to enter Australia was cancelled.
But the world tennis number one has said he will cooperate with the authorities and leave the country. The Serbian, who has not been vaccinated for Covid-19, had his visa cancelled for a second time, with the Australian government saying he may pose a risk to the community.
And he says he hopes the focus can now return to tennis and the Australian Open Grand Slam, which starts tomorrow. Djokovic had appealed Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's decision to cancel his visa on the grounds that he was a threat to public order.
It was claimed his presence would encourage anti-vaccination sentiment amid Australia's worst Covid-19 outbreak. In a statement released this morning, after the court dismissed the case, the 34-year-old said: "I will now be taking some time to rest and to recuperate, before making any further comments beyond this."I am extremely disappointed with the Court ruling to dismiss my application for judicial review of the Minister's decision to cancel my visa, which means I cannot stay in Australia and participate in the Australian Open."I respect the Court's ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country."I am uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love."I would like to wish the players, tournament officials, staff, volunteers and fans all the best for the tournament."
