A family requested their mum be 'sectioned' numerous times after three 'suicide attempts' just weeks before she disappeared, an inquest heard.

Marie Irene Carol Scott went missing on December 18, 2017, Manchester Evening News reports. Roughly 11 months later her leg was discovered in the River Irwell in Salford, with the rest of her remains not found until December 2019, when they were recovered from Mersey Marsh near Frodsham.

On the first day of the week-long inquest, coroner Adrian Farrow heard how consultants, police officers and ambulance technicians were all asked by Marie's oldest son, Stuart, and her husband, James, to detain the 58-year-old under the Mental Health Act.

They made the pleas after she had attempted to take her own life three times, South Manchester coroner's court heard.James said Marie first attempted to take her life on December 3, 2017, after being found at home, but had been discharged just 24 hours later, with doctors allegedly saying she was 'just being silly'."I could not believe she was being discharged," James said in court."She tried to take her own life yesterday.
