A Crossmichael man made his way around the parish boundaries using a bike, a canoe and by walking.Ed Hex took on the challenge, which covered more than 21 miles, to raise awareness of the village’s heritage centre. And so far he’s also raised nearly £400 for the British Heart Foundation.Ed said: “It was 35 years in the planning, it was something I’d always wanted to do but now that I’ve done it I never want to do it again!“I had aimed to finish at half five but it took me until half nine.“There wasn’t a lot of water in the River Urr.

I was joined by one of my friends but I think we were only able to paddle for about one mile in five, and that was just in little bits, as we had to keep getting out the water to get round the rocks.“Going back up the River Dee was fine, although I needed to get the pole and sail out a few times.” Ed was also supported on his journey, which took him from Crossmichael down to Castle Douglas and back – by Loch Ken Ranger Ken Scott and his wife.

He chose the British Heart Foundation as Royal Mail colleague Ewan Hitchell died suddenly in May at home in Dalbeattie. He had been preparing to take on an Ultra Scotland race to raise funds for a defibrillator for Dalbeattie Star Youth Club.

Ed has produced a video of his journey so that people can share the beauty of Crossmichael, which can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwkJyWS7wiA.
