Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (born November 20, 1942) is an American politician who served as the 47th vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017 and represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate from 1973 to 2009. A member of the Democratic Party, Biden is the presumptive Democratic nominee for president in the 2020 election. He unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and in 2008.

The president-elect’s appeal comes as the pandemic data from Johns Hopkins University bore out the alarming fact that in the past two weeks alone, the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus has risen nearly 65%.
In one three day period there were rates of nearly 100,000 new infections per day. According to the data recorded by Johns Hopkins University, the U.S.
now accounts for nearly one-fifth of all of the global infections which are now at 50 million. This amount is greater than any other nation affected by the pandemic.
