Perth and Kinross Council has voted to freeze council tax in 2024/25.Councillors met on Wednesday, February 28 to set next year's revenue and capital budgets. The SNP administration's budget was voted through by 22 votes to 14 with the Liberal Democrats - the only group to oppose the tax freeze - abstaining. The report - put before councillors - said the local authority had been offered £4.7 million of Scottish Government funding to support a council tax freeze.

This was £703,000 greater than the indicative 3.9 per cent increase voted through by councillors last year for 2024/25.Following the publication of PKC officers' budget report, the Scottish Government last week announced additional local government funding to local authorities that implement the council tax freeze.

At Wednesday's meeting, chief accountant Scott Walker said - depending on the UK spring budget - he calculated PKC could be due a £1.7 million share of the potential additional £62.7m being made available to Scotland's councils.Tabling the council tax freeze, leader SNP council leader Grant Laing said: "When we set the provisional 2024/25 budget last year our planning assumption had been for no increase in Scottish Government funding.

We also agreed an indicative council tax increase of 3.9 per cent."I am pleased to say that neither of these assumptions have held true, with an actual funding increase from the Scottish Government of almost £20 million.
