With the cost of living crisis and industrial disputes across numerous sectors including doctors, nurses and railway workers, 2023 has been a hard year for many families in Britain.

And while times are undoubtedly tough, one terrible winter 45 years ago was so notorious it has gone down in history as the 'Winter of Discontent'.

Between November 1978 and February 1979, a period of widespread strikes saw the country grind to a halt with massive queues at the petrol stations.

Demands for pay raises by private, and later public sector workers, saw trade unions clash with Prime Minister James Callaghan and his Labour government.
