Bobby Madden on English lower leagues move as he signs off from Scottish football with 'time for a change' confession

Bobby Madden will referee in England's League 1 and League 1 next season after stepping away from the SFA.The ref resigned from his post in Scotland, making the move south of the border in time for next season.

Madden spent almost 20 years taking charge of clashes within Scottish football, beginning his career back in August 2002. He has since held the whistle on over 400 occasions, taking charge of a number of huge games, including Scottish Cup Finals and league deciders.

But the 43-year-old has made the decision to take on 'new challenges' in his professional development, joining he National List of referees.He took to Instagram to confirm the news, penning an emotional farewell and sending his gratitude.Madden's post read: "Time for a change."I say goodbye to Scottish football after almost 2 years of amazing memories and experiences since I began the entrance class in August 2002."I have refereed over 400 professional fixtures since being promoted to Category 1 in 2008, including both major cup finals and many memorable matches."In line with other professional development opportunities I'm undertaking I'm excited to start a new chapter in the English Football League from season 2022/23."I will be joining their National List of referees, officiating in League 1 and 2 and I welcome the new challenge."I will definitely miss the fantastic crowd interaction in Scotland and hopefully it won't be too long until the English fans make me feel as welcome! "I would like to thank the Scottish FA and all my colleagues for their support over the years. "Thanks for the memories".
