Beloved Slattery's cake shop shuts down for the first time in 53 years... but they'll be back

It should be festooned with exquisite chocolate eggs, fancies, and pastries, in the run up to Easter. But the lavish tiered wedding cakes in the window are out of sight.

For the first time in 53 years one of the region's most famous shops has had to close - because of the coronavirus. Slattery's in Whitefield is boarded up to guard against looters and its ovens and fridges switched off.

But the business, on Bury New Road, which employs more than 90 staff, hopes to re-open once the crisis eases. It is famed for its luxury chocolates, handmade on the premises, as well as bread and cakes, and has celebrities among is customers.
