One shopper who headed out to get some groceries from their local Asda store has claimed the trip left them "shaken with anger".
Carl Bovis, a nature and animal photographer, said he was appalled to discover the supermarket chain had installed an anti-bird netting that had already ensnared one bird.
The animal lover, whose work regularly focuses on birds and wildlife, noticed the cruel practice at the Bridgewater store where he thought the feathered animal was just relaxing.
After finding out the entangled bird was lifeless, the photographer quickly took to social media to urge the Big Four grocer to remove the netting and stop birds dying "in agony".His snaps have since sparked outrage amongst Asda shoppers, with the hashtag #Takeitdown trending on UK Twitter and others threatening to boycott.
