Alex Salmond's Alba party to debate removal of Queen if Scotland becomes independent

disappointing Holyrood election campaign. A motion will be debated by members on whether an independent Scotland should become a republic like Ireland - or continue as a member of the Commonwealth with the Queen as head of state.

If Alba decides to back republicanism it would be a significant shift from the established SNP position on the Royal Family.

When Salmond was First Minister from 2007-2014 he consistently backed the Queen remaining as head of state if Scots ever voted in favour of independence.While many SNP members hold republican sympathies it has never become an official position among senior party figures.
