Ethan Shanfeld Thomas the Train is getting a new friend, as the iconic British television franchise “Thomas & Friends” introduces its first character with autism, Bruno the Brake Car. The character is voiced by Chuck Smith, an autistic actor. According to Mattel, Bruno will play a “vital role” in “Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go,” a reboot of the long-running animated series “Thomas & Friends” that debuted in 2021. Bruno will also appear in the franchise’s YouTube series, music album and “Thomas & Friends Storytime” podcast. Mattel Television developed the character in collaboration with organizations including the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and Easterseals Southern California, as well as writers and autism advocates Daniel Share-Strom and Aaron Likens.

Zack Sharf Julia Roberts is returning to the romantic-comedy genre for the first time in over 20 years with the upcoming “Ticket for Paradise,” and she hopes audiences will finally appreciate the hard work that goes into making feel-good cinema. Roberts dominated the genre in the 1990s with hits such as “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997). The Oscar winner recently told The New York Times that she believes moviegoers didn’t appreciate the rom-com boom enough and all the hard work that went into it. “I think we didn’t appreciate the bumper crop of romantic comedies that we had then,” Roberts said. “You don’t see all the effort and puppet strings because it’s fun and sweet and people are laughing and kissing and being mischievous.”

But these things shouldn’t always be so taken for granted, as Giles Martin points out. “At the end of last year when I was finishing ‘Get Back,’ I went, ‘Oh, God, I better listen to these outtakes and start going through them to see whether we’ve got enough to do this’,” says Martin, who oversaw not just the remix but the two CDs’ worth of previously unheard recordings of early versions and alternate takes. “Because we always want to make sure that we’re not scraping the bottom of the barrel, and you want to make sure that there’s enough outtakes for a ‘Revolver’ boxed set. If not, do we think about doing ‘Revolver’ and ‘Rubber Soul’ all together and just have outtakes from both?”

For 16 years, viewers of both football broadcasts have seen their titles arranged in a “shield” design. This season, the programs are getting a new look, with title logos that can be displayed more readily no matter the venue on which each program is being watched. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all design direction. It’s far more nimble and less limiting than what a metallic shield was able to offer,” says Mark Levy, the NBC Sports senior vice president of original productions and creative who oversees the design of the division’s programming. “It just offers a flexibility that allos designers and animators a level of creativity” they didn’t have in the past.

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Soumya Sriraman, most recently head of Amazon’s Prime Video Channels, has been hired by Qurate Retail Group, the parent company of QVC and HSN, as president of streaming. In the newly created role at the John Malone-controlled company, Sriraman will lead Qurate Retail’s streaming commerce business, which includes the QVC+ and HSN+ streaming services and QVC’s and HSN’s expanding presence on digital livestreaming TV. Sriraman joins the company effective Sept. 7, reporting to Mary Campbell, president of vCommerce Ventures (the business unit that operates the company’s streaming service). Sriraman spent two years leading Amazon’s Prime Video Channels in the U.S. and exited the role this summer, as first reported by Variety. She was in charge of the business that sells add-on subscription services for Paramount+, Discovery+, Starz, PBS and others to Amazon Prime members. Prior to Amazon, Sriraman was the founding CEO and president of streaming service BritBox, formed by the BBC and ITV. Before that she served was EVP of franchise and digital enterprises at BBC Studios and held senior positions at Tartan, Vivendi Universal, Warner Bros. and Universal Studios.
