A man who raped and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl has been put behind bars for more than nine years. Joseph Taylor 'took advantage of his victim as she slept' and 'targeted her at her most vulnerable', a court was told.

He committed the offences when he was between 17 and 18 years of age, Cheshire Live reports. Police have commended the victim for her bravery after she came forward about the historic sex offences.

Taylor, of Solvay Road, in Northwich in Cheshire, pleaded guilty to two counts each of rape and sexual assault. READ MORE: Police hunt man accused of fraud who failed to appear in court At Chester Crown Court on Thursday, August 11, he was jailed for six years and nine months.

Detective Constable Joe Duckworth said: "Firstly, I would like to commend the victim for the bravery she has shown throughout this investigation. "Taylor intentionally targeted the victim at her most vulnerable state, and he purposefully chose to take advantage of her whilst she slept to avoid repercussions.
