Traffic chaos on M8 as 'five car smash' causes huge tailbacks

Drivers are facing major delays on the M8 this morning after a multi-vehicle smash closed the carriageway. Emergency services raced to the M8 near junction 22 at around 7.30am today following reports of the incident on the westbound lane.Police confirmed the road was closed at junction 22, with Helen Street also being blocked off westbound.

According to Glasgow Live, the delays are due to a five-car car collision. Traffic Scotland said traffic was being directed off the exit slip at J24, to rejoin the road using the westbound entry slip.

An update outlined: "A closure was in place at J22, but traffic can now either use the S/B #M77 or continue on the #M8 to J24 and use the exit/entry slip roads as a diversion." Traffic tailed back over the Kingston Bridge with drivers facing delays of nearly an hour and a half on the M74 northbound during this morning's rush hour.There was also an hour and 20 minute delays on the M8 westbound and M77 northbound.Glasgow South West Police tweeted: "Emergency services are in attendance on the M8 near junction 22.

The westbound carriageway is currently closed at junction 22, and Helen Street is closed westbound from the junction. Diversions are in place."
