Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson‘s new movie The High Note is now available to rent at home on demand and the film includes a scene that sheds light on what it’s like to be a black woman in the music industry.

In the film, Tracee plays Grace Davis, a huge music star who hasn’t released an album in years, and Dakota plays her personal assistant, who is also an aspiring music producer.

In the exclusive clip that we’re premiering on JustJared.com, Dakota‘s character Maggie tries to convince Grace that she should record a new album.

Grace responds by explaining what it’s like to be a black woman of a certain age in the music industry. She says, “In the history of music, only five women over 40 have ever had a number one hit.
