The crossings – of which there are 32 throughout Ayr, Prestwick, Coylton and Troon – are equipped with a sensor underneath the existing push button, allowing pedestrians to activate the crossing with a simple hand motion.The new system provides a solution to Covid concerns over touching public surfaces and risking picking up germs, as those using the crossing no longer need to physically push a button.An Ayrshire Roads Alliance spokesperson said: “At the start of the pandemic, the Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of South Ayrshire Council) applied for Sustrans Spaces for People Funding to help make our streets safer for walking and cycling.“It was important that these measures protected public health and supported physical.
