Two thugs launched a vicious attack on a taxi driver leaving him in a serious condition in hospital. The suspects assaulted the driver, aged in his 60s, and tried to steal his taxi in the terrifying robbery on Cleveland Road in north Manchester.

They also stole his phone. The victim was taken to hospital from the scene. He remains there with severe head injuries. His condition is described as serious, but not life-threatening, police said.

Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in custody for questioning. Detectives are now appealing for anyone with information about the attack - which happened at around 12.50am on Monday (March 14) - to come forward.
