A brutal thug attacked his partner because she refused to take part in a "swinging" session. Lawrence Drew, 55, had been released from jail on licence for assaulting the same victim when he then struck again after she refused his suggestion.

A court heard how he shoved her to the ground, kicked her a number of times in the back, called her awful names and bent her fingers back.

When the argument continued into the following day, he poured a can of lager over her head, Chronicle Live reports. Drew, of Houghton-le-Spring, Sunderland, admitted to assault and common assault and has now been imprisoned for 20 months.

Recorder Jamie Hill QC, at Newcastle Crown Court, told him: "It seems this relationship is toxic to say the least and your behaviour towards her has been appalling. "This happened in her own home and is aggravated by the fact you added insult to injury by pouring lager over her the next day."Prosecutor John Crawford told the court Drew had been jailed for 14 months in January last year for an attack on the same victim. He was released almost immediately due to the time spent on remand. The court heard on June 7 Drew was staying at the victim's home.Mr Crawford told the court: "The assault took place at her home where she, the defendant and a friend were present."She states the defendant proposed he wanted to take part in swinging.
