‘This is a movement, not a moment’: Why trans rights activists were protesting in Manchester today

If the pandemic hadn’t hit, the 16th annual Sparkle Weekend celebrating the trans and non-binary community would have taken place this weekend.While trans and Pride flags could still be seen across the city centre - it was for a completely different purpose.Protesters took to St Peter's Square today to campaign against the Government’s response against the trans and non-binary community, as well as its handling of proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).Hundreds of people turned up to the event, which was organised by the Sparkle charity, with signs expressing everything from ‘Trans Rights are Human Rights’ to ‘This is a Movement, Not a Moment’.Taz, a teaching assistant from Manchester, said they were attending the protest.
