Simon Murray insists Don Cowie played a huge part in him becoming one of the Premiership’s top marksmen this season. And the 23-goal hitman insists the soon-to-become boss is the right man to get Ross County firing again next season too.Caretaker Cowie has been told the job in Dingwall is his after steering the Highlanders to safety via the play-offs.
Murray reckons the 41-year-old is ready to take on his first permanent role after steadying a turbulent season that saw Malky Mackay sacked in November and his successor Derek Adams follow just three months later.Indeed the striker says it feels like Cowie has been a manager for years after he delivered statement wins over Rangers, Hibs and Hearts before guiding the Staggies to a 6-1 aggregate play-off final win over Raith.
But it’s the effect he’s had on Murray’s game which has impressed the veteran frontman just as much.Of his 23 goals, 10 came in the 16 games since Cowie took over.
Eight of his 14 in the league - which saw him sit alongside Kyogo in the top seven Premiership marksmen - arrived under Cowie’s stewardship.
