Scots pensioner who failed to return home from Highlands biking trip found by rescue helicopter

Highlands has been found safe and well. George McGowan sparked a major search and rescue operation after failing to return from a motorbike ride at Ben Bhraggie in Sutherland on Monday afternoon.

The 77-year-old was expected back at 1pm but the alarm was raised when he did not return.Dozens of people were involved in the search for the pensioner, who is from the Golspie area, and his white Beta Alp 200 motorcycle.

Assynt Mountain Rescue, HM Coastguard, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and SARDA were all drafted in to try to find George.

Thankfully he was traced on Tuesday morning after being spotted by a helicopter who landed and gave him first aid. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are grateful to all of the public volunteers.
