Scotland has no place for the far right, the co-leader of the Scottish Greens will tell a rally in Glasgow today.Patrick Harvie is set to join a crowd of hundreds in the city's George Square to stand against racism and anti-immigration rhetoric. The rally was organised for September 6 to counter an event previously promoted by a notorious extremist on social media.Tommy Robinson, who has multiple convictions for a variety of offences, had called for a "pro-UK" event to take place in George Square. His message was posted in July just days after Southport was rocked by drunken thugs who hurled bricks and stones at a local mosque and injured dozens of police officers. The Merseyside town was united in grief after the brutal murder of three schoolgirls attending a dance class at a local community centre.

Hundreds of people were subsequently arrested at subsequent violent demonstrations in England last month following the Southport knife attack.

Speaking ahead of the rally in Glasgow today, Harvie said: "There should be no place in Glasgow or Scotland for the toxic mix of fear, hate and division that the far right promotes. "The violence and criminality we saw from them across the rest of the UK last month was shameful and must never be allowed to take root here."Glasgow’s a multicultural city with a long, proud history of standing up against the far right.

We saw it when the English Defence League tried to stir up hate, we saw it when residents stood up to the Home Office at Kenmure Street, and we’re seeing it again here today."But we need to be clear that this threat runs far deeper than the likes of Tommy Robinson.
