Christmas and New Year are the most difficult time of year for Nicola Harteveld as they signal another year passing since her beloved teenage daughter took her own life.

February 7 will mark a total of five years since Megan Evans, aged 14, was discovered dead at her home after a secret battle against cyber bullies that she had not disclosed to her parents.

The pain and loss has not lessened even to this day, as Nicola remembers her teenage daughter: "Beautiful, kind, vivacious, funny, hugely popular and confident."However, five years on from the tragedy, Nicola now recognises the signs that her daughter was struggling, she was just not aware at the time.

She can look back now, knowing "one million percent" that she would do things differently. She states that looking out for youngsters struggling is more important than ever, as they try to navigate the uncertainty amid the Covid-19 pandemic and social media, Wales Online reports. "I can see things blindingly obvious now that I didn't have a clue back then," she said from her home in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, which she shares with Shaun Evans, her partner of 22 years. "I was completely naïve about it, that I always thought that somebody with a mental health problem, you could visibly see it.
