Popular Renfrew butcher hangs up his knives after 62 years serving the community

A popular butcher whose family has been providing the people of Renfrew with their meat supplies for more than 100 years has announced that it’s time to hang up the carving knives.

Hugh McWhinnie and his shop on the town’s Fulbar Street has been a staple of life for residents in the area for the past 62 years.

He first started working in his father’s popular shop as a bright-eyed, sprightly 15-year-old.The shop has been in the family for generations – having been operated by his great-great-grandfather more than 100 years ago.Hugh, 76, was reluctant to let the shop go but personal health issues ended up making the decision for him.“I’ve got cancer at the back of my tongue,” he told the Paisley Daily Express. “That’s the only reason.
