Popular Ayr newsagent to close after 80 years in business

Ayr’s Sandgate, will close up shop after eight decades serving customers from its prominent corner spot. The newsagent, located a stone’s throw from the town’s bus station, sold everything from snacks, toys, and souvenirs for tourists —and of course newspapers including the Ayrshire Post.Current owner Sonny Aslam, who has had the shop for over 10 years, is stepping down for personal reasons and said he will miss the rapport he has with customers.Sonny, 52, said: “It’s been here for 80 odd years.“I remember a lady around the corner — she was in her 90s but sadly passed away — said she was 17 when the stairs were put in this shop.
