Women throughout Scotland will now be able to get the progestogen-only contraceptive pill without going to their GP. The medication - known as the mini pill - will now be available in community pharmacies, the Scottish Government has announced.

Following a successful trial in the Lothian and Tayside areas, a three-month supply of the progestogen-only pill can now be prescribed over the counter.

Women will still be advised to contact their GP or local sexual health services to discuss their family planning needs, however ministers hope the scheme will bridge the gap between emergency contraception and long-term contraception.
