M&Ms have been loved the world over since emerging on the the supermarket shelves more than 80 years ago. Since the original ones with the chocolate filling bounced onto the scene, there have been many different variations of them.
Peanut butter, almond, pretzel, crispy, dark chocolate and caramel are among the flavours that have been in Scots stores over the decades.While a lot of Scots enjoy munching on the sweet treat, it would appear that many of us don’t know what M&M actually stands for.
Our partner publication, the Daily Star, has given an explanation on the name behind the popular snack. M&M's are the flagship product of the Mars Wrigley Confectionery division of Mars, Incorporated and they originated over in the US.
The candy-coated chocolate concept was reportedly inspired by a method used to allow soldiers in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) to carry chocolate in warm climates without it melting.
