A charity hero told how he had been abused and ignored as he tried to raise money for care workers.Major John Paterson of Kilsyth, Lanarkshire, has been trying to walk 2.6 miles a day in a bid to raise money to buy personal protection equipment for care staff.Although at 74 he is long retired, he is keen to help out with particular problems in care homes.But he has come under attack as he walks around his hometown carrying a bucket for donations.John said: “A man came across the street and started shouting, ‘Get a job’ and ‘stop begging you lazy b******’.

He was in his late 60s and he may have been drunk. It was disgusting.”He came home without a single penny in his bucket for four days on his walk but added: “I made £10 the other day.
