Netflix Short Film Prize Pushes Oscar Field To New Record For Most Streaming Film Wins

Netflix’s win for Best Animated Short with If Anything Happens I Love You helped this year’s Oscar field set a new record for most wins by streaming films, with five.The animation trophy followed a win for Live Action Short by another Netflix title, Two Distant Strangers.

Netflix had earlier gotten on the board with two Oscars for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Amazon Prime Video won Best Sound for Sound of Metal.The new record came halfway through the night and eclipses the totals of four wins each for the ceremonies held in 2017 and 2019.

Of course, there is a large asterix next to this year’s record, which is the decision by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to do away with the traditional requirement of a theatrical release.
