A mother who confessed to ending her terminally ill son's life with a fatal dose of morphine decades ago has passed away. Antonya Cooper died over the weekend after battling terminal breast, pancreatic and liver cancer, her family announced.The 77-year-old from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, recently revealed she ended the life of her seven-year-old son Hamish in 1981, hoping to influence a change in the UK's laws on assisted dying.
The police confirmed they were looking into the matter following Cooper's confession. Assisted dying remains illegal in the UK.
After a BBC report aired on Wednesday, Thames Valley Police reportedly visited Cooper's family. During the interview, the Mirror reports Cooper acknowledged she had taken her son's life.Cooper's daughter Tabitha released a statement to the BBC: "She was peaceful, pain-free, at home and surrounded by her loving family.
It was exactly the way she wanted it. She lived life on her terms and she died on her terms."Hamish was afflicted with neuroblastoma, an uncommon form of cancer that primarily strikes children.
