Manchester town hall reopening and Albert Square work delayed until 2024 because of Covid-19, nesting peregine falcons and the discovery of hazardous materials

Manchester town hall’s reopening has been delayed until 2024 due to mounting costs caused largely by the coronavirus pandemic.Problems arising from nesting peregrine falcons in the building’s clock tower, and the discovery of asbestos and hazardous tar, have pushed construction cost up to £214m.Works to pedestrianise Albert Square and transform it into ‘one of the finest civic spaces in Europe’ will also be pushed back.The total cost of the Our Town Hall project to restore the Grade I listed building is around £330m, including professional fees, contingency planning and staff relocation.It was expected to be completed in December 2023 but a report to a meeting of Manchester council’s executive on Friday revealed that it would be delayed.
