Manchester's £186m Factory arts centre to change to meet fire safety standards

The theatre roof was due to be made out of a synthetic polymer but its use on the angular building prompted doubts around whether it would meet ‘a suitable fire safety standard’.

Manchester council is now proposing to use a standing seam metal roof to ‘have absolute certainty on safety’ while also creating a unique ‘jewel-like’ shape.

Cladding on the truck lift, which is capable of bringing two lorries up into the building from the street below, has also been scrapped in favour of the current concrete finish.
